An audit on the clinical and laboratory profile of patients with different variants of Guillain-Barre syndrome and effect of various treatment strategies on their recovery

Background: Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is an immune-mediated disorder of the peripheral nervous system, causing muscle weakness, paralysis, and sensory deficits. Its treatment mainly involves supportive care, immunomodulatory therapies such as intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) plasma exchange (PE), rehabilitation. Several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) meta-analyses have evaluated efficacy safety apheresis in GBS, but results been conflicting limited by methodological issues. Methods: This a retrospective study with sample 30 patients carried out at neurology OPD tertiary care centre Pune, Maharashtra over period 32 months from July 2020 February 2023. Patients were followed up for six months, their outcomes compared terms improvement clinical disability scores, need mechanical ventilation, time to recovery walking ability other functional outcomes. Results: Apheresis significantly improved scores NCV GBS comparison IVIg corticosteroids. Moreover, who received showed shorter than those did not. Symptomatic differences seen between different subtypes there was no difference response or subtypes. Conclusions: Treatment should be considered not responding conservative management. Earlier has shown good electrophysiological regardless subtype.
